LMTA’s STUDENTS HELPING STUDENTS FUND
The Students Helping Students Fund has been established by LMTA to lend monetary assistance to students who are in need of financial support to continue their music study.
Funding for the SHS Fund will be provided primarily by playathons held at state conventions and various locations throughout the state and by any donations received from contributing patrons or organizations.
The Fund will be governed by a committee consisting of an appointed chairman, a member of the college chapter or local affiliate of the area hosting the state convention, one member-at-large, the LMTA President and the LMTA Treasurer.
Duties of the SHS Chairman will include:
1. Keeping an accurate record of all contributions to the Fund in conjunction with the LMTA Treasurer.
2. Dispersing funds to deserving students through the LMTA Treasurer. Requests for tuition funding (subsidies $65 per month) can be dispensed without consultation. Requests for greater amounts require consultation with the SHS Board.
3. Assisting the chair of the State Playathon in planning, scheduling, and acquiring materials. It is hoped that the MTNA Student Chapter of the host university will undertake the responsibility of the State Playathon. In the event there is no student chapter at the host university, the local affiliate should appoint a chairman for the event.
4. Assisting the chairs of various playathons throughout the state in planning, scheduling, and acquiring materials. Playathons may be scheduled at any time by an affiliate or individual member by contacting the SHS Chairman.
5. Promoting and publicizing playathons by writing notices and articles and by maintaining correspondence with the membership.
With the 5 year anniversaries of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita upon us, many memories and reflections come to mind. We all remember the difficulties of those times but also the amazing opportunities that arose and the outpouring of generosity that was shown. One of the wonderful things that came from our organization at the time was the development of the Save Our Students Fund (now known as the Students Helping Students Fund). Since the creation of this fund, countless students and their families from across our entire state have been able to afford music lessons, materials, and even acquire instruments when otherwise those opportunities would have been financially impossible. Helping these students has in turn helped all of us teachers!
All t-shirts are 100% cotton American Apparel brand with New Orleans artist Susan Woodard's wonderful drawing on the front. The back simply says Louisiana Music Teachers Association. All t-shirts are $15, and all proceeds will go directly to the Students Helping Students Fund.
